North County Veterans Stand Down
While consuming carbon atoms at Grape Day Park this
afternoon, had the pleasure of meeting Jim Hester, Vietnam veteran and
organizer for the 1st Annual Veterans Stand Down North County.
What is a stand down? Stand Down
will provide homeless veterans with shelter, medical, dental, legal, clothing,
showers, haircuts, food, counseling, employment and other needed services. Since 1988, there have been over 20 Stand Downs held in San Diego and they are designed to create a
transformational community of participants, service providers and volunteers
that is based on dignity, respect and empowerment.
That’s OK, I had no idea what the term meant when I first
heard it either. Anyway the upcoming
stand down event will take place January
27-29, 2017 at Green Oaks Ranch in Vista, CA.
While conversing with Jim, I asked what types of donations are
useful; believe it or not they need “socks”. I
would venture to guess that toiletries are all welcome as well. If you would like to
donate or volunteer, please contact Jim at J. N. (Jim) Hester remember to put Volunteer or Donations in the subject line of your email.
For more information regarding the event I have linked the
website and their Facebook Page.
